Start Your Year, Start Your Day

6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.

7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6-7 (NLT)

Are you worried about anything today? There is certainly much for each of us to be concerned about. If you watch the news, our country and even the whole world seems wrought with serious problems.

Every day we are confronted with images of war, natural disasters, tragic accidents, political corruption, and outbreaks of disease. On top of that, we all face the daily challenges of making a living, nurturing our marriages, guiding our children through various challenges and the complexities of all our personal and business relationships, not to mention any personal or family health issues that may be part of the picture.

It is with all these things in mind that Paul instructs us not to be worried about anything--any circumstance, any issue--but to pray about everything. Overwhelming things, everyday things, unknown future things--everything. And while we’re at it, thank God for all he has done. Sometimes it’s good to make that a list – our “thankful list.” It’s so easy to memorize and rehearse our “needs” and “wants” list, but we quickly forget all the good things that God has done and is doing for us.

So, after we pray, then what? The peace of God. That tranquility of soul knowing our eternal relationship with God has been settled through Jesus Christ. The knowledge that our God is all-knowing, all-powerful, ever-present. The sense of contentment and lack of fear this brings. That peace, which goes beyond understanding, will guard our hearts and minds as we live our life for Christ... one day at a time.

This is huge! In our world, which is filled with turmoil and uncertainty, we can possess peace and contentment for today and have confidence in our future. Why? Because our God is in control and he loves us more than we can even imagine. Because he has given us personal access to bring our anxieties to him through prayer and he has promised to hear us... every word. And he even knows our heart when the pain is so great that words won’t come... and he has promised to answer. (Psalm 65:5; 1 John 5:14-15)

A Thankful Thought

I am so thankful for God's Word. Every time I read the Bible, I know that it isn't just a book written by man. Each word is truly inspired by God, left for us... left for me! Just so that I can know His truth and His perfect plan. I am so grateful to live in a country where I have instant access to it... at home, at church... even on my phone! Knowing that there are places on earth where it is illegal to own a Bible makes me ever so thankful that I can read the Bible whenever I want. I truly treasure God's Word with all of my heart.
